Well, we were all happy when our government announced that they are phasing out the old-skool light bulbs. 18Seconds has taken it one step further and put a bit of state-by-state competition in the mix (in the US of course ... but potential for Australia to have a similar site!).

This site is essentially a Yahoo Maps mash-up. You can search on the map state-by-state to see how many CFL (energy-saving) light bulbs have been purchased in a state or city. There's also a drop-down list so you can search for a state alphabetically if you don't know where it is on the map, or you can type in a postcode to see how your city is doing.

As well as showing the ranking of states and cities, there's an area on the left that shows how much money has been saved by purchasing these globes, how much coal has been saved, and how many pounds of CO2 has been prevented. It's so simple it's beautiful. Oh yeah, and at the bottom you can tell your friends.

Verdict: this site rocks :-)

My only query was the site name 18seconds, but then I read a bit further and apparently that's how long it takes to change a lightbulb (blond jokes aside). Also, I was surprised to see that Yahoo is behind this site, not a non-profit ... perhaps it's a showcase of what can be done with Yahoo Maps?
