· Sorry, and tools for social activism ·
The 2 Web Crew's podcast last week (13th Feb) focussed on saying sorry (to the Stolen Generations) and web 2.0 for social activism.
Laurel Papworth was a guest on the show, and together with Tangler’s Mick Liubinskas and The Podcast Network’s Cameron Reilly they discussed how people used technology to take part in Sorry Day. Obviously this was an event I had quite a bit of involvement in, and I can tell you that MySpace was particularly supportive of our efforts to get people to take part:
MySpace.com Australia and New Zealand vice president Rebekah Horne said today's apology provided an opportunity for Australians to become actively engaged in debating the country's future online.
"Today is unequivocally an historical moment for all Australians and we want as many of our three million Australian MySpace users to be a part of it," she said.
"In addition to working with Australians for Native Title and Reconciliation (ANTaR) and asking users to change their MySpace status to 'is sorry' and mood to hopeful, we're also inviting our MySpace users to debate the issue on our AussieHub reconciliation blog (www.myspace.com/aussiehub)."
Asking people to change their status to "is sorry" worked. Wanna know the ROI of our time investment? ANTaR gained about 300 new friends from this event. To give you an indication of how long it would normally take us to get that many friends, we had about 650 after a year of being on MySpace in 2007. This is 300 more people we can chat to about Indigenous issues, and encourage them to learn more and get more involved :)
HREOC has also suggested that people add their photos to a Flickr group created for pics taken on Sorry Day. Do I need to mention the various Facebook groups focused on the apology? Nah, didn't think so, you lot know all that stuff already ;)
P.S. Thanks for the plug on the podcast, Laurel :)

You are very welcome m’dear :) BTW I’m a co-host, not guest. That’s why I’m on each week. :P
