· Weekly activist inspiration ·
This weekly activist inspiration column is a new idea I had. I've decided to concentrate my efforts on writing blog posts about thoughts and ideas rather than comment on every e-campaign that comes along. So those that don't warrant a blog post but are still very interesting will be posted here from now on. I hope you find this column useful (and feel welcome to send me suggestions).
- I gave at the office - Seth Godin - "The good news is this: the Internet is not a replacement for direct mail fundraising. It is, in fact, something much bigger than that for just about every non-profit."
- Can activists trust YouTube? - ZapBoom - "... activists should be aware that the principal concern of many of the most useful digital activism technologies (YouTube, Blogger, Google, Skype) is not justice but profit. You cannot necessarily trust them to defend your content and your rights if they come under government pressure to remove your content or reveal your identity."
- Kids use facebook to organize protest against South African law - Mashable! - "14-year-old Frances Murray did what any teenager of the 21st century would do: she started a Facebook group called Everyone Against The New Kissing Law. The group, which currently stands at 14,736 members, is organizing public displays of affection at malls around the country every weekend this month."
- Tear it down - Amnesty International campaign - "Each pixel represents our individual power to end the lawlessness and the human rights violations inherent in this system [Guantanamo]. We are asking individuals, one person at a time, to own their pixel, and show their commitment to ending this human rights scandal. Via the social web / Grant Young.
- Show respect at the Booby Wall - Osocio - "There are a lot of breasts on the internet, but there’s nothing like this. In support of Rethink Breast Cancer, Schick Quattro for Women launched the Booby Wall, a virtual, interactive exhibit of breasts designed to educate Canadian women about early breast cancer detection by encouraging them to show their breasts some TLC."
